Mormons: Christians??? I'm going with no on this one

The latest batch of Mormons stopped by my front porch the other day. They switch these guys out every 6 months around here, so I get fresh set of friends every 7 months or so.

By this time, I pretty much know the drill. The Mormon Jesus is special because he submitted to a separate god - Heavenly Father. His worthiness is based on his obedience not his inherent worth. Both of these gods have bodies. The Holy Spirit, another God must not have a body. Some day, since we have been given Jesus' stepping stool of obedience, we'll be able to work our way into worthy god status. So, what's my point?

Here's how it played out:
After establishing that sin is a violation of the law which is a reflection of God's character, I started to build the foundation for how Mormon salvation is based on works. I totally ignored the fact that Mormons deny the Biblical teachings of Jesus on eternal hell. Using a Bible-Is-True (presuppositional) approach, I referenced the factual existence of hell in my breakdown.

Biblical Truth that contradicts Mormon doctrine:
1. One sin is worth eternal suffering in hell because it is a rejection of God's character.
2. God's character is of incredible, eternal value that a sinless human could only substitute himself for one other sinless. Human worth is equal to another human worth.
3. Jesus paid for millions of sins in the space of 6 hours because his worth is God-worth. Jesus is infinitely more worthy than humans because he is uncreated, eternal God. Not, created, eternal human-became-god. Jesus' obedience did not make him more worthy. It showcased his inherent pre-existing worth.
4. This discussion forced the Mormon guy who knew his stuff to admit that his Jesus is of equal value to him and that the thing that made Jesus better was his obedience.
5. The Mormons told me that their works count because Jesus makes them righteous.
6. The crux of the entire discussion ended when I got my point across - the knowledgeable Mormon got upset because I asserted that his righteousness was worthless and permeated with humanistic motives. Why? The Mormon is depending on his works plus Jesus' works.
7. To the Mormon, the self-righteous man is the Biblical pharisee. Unfortunately, the self-righteous man is the Mormon.

The true Christian knows that he is a total jerk and that ONLY Jesus' works count for righteousness. God's love for the true Christian originates within Himself. God knows that the true Christian is a dirty, ugly sinner. He loves and justifies that dirty, rotten sinner based only on Himself and His work through the 2nd person of the Godhead - Jesus Christ.

Pray for Steven and Cori because these two dudes are depending on their own righteous works, albeit done within the context of Jesus' works. It is a slick deception which is difficult to pinpoint.

What Does Missional Look Like in My Life?

Missional: Reaching the unchurched by integrating into their culture through relationships and building on commonalities.

Missional People choose their housing, work, past-times based on the unchurched that they know God is calling them to reach.

Missional Churches structure their discipleship, outreach, preaching, worship, seating, facilities, and fellowship in such a way as to welcome and teach the unchurched, without compromising on the doctrines and holiness of God and Jesus Christ.

Your Missional Life: Everyone has a different looking missional lifestyle because God calls us to unique sections of the population. God opens up relationships with families and individuals for you that I may never encounter. God will give me friendships and relationships that are probably different than yours. That is why missional living is realistic - because your gifts, talents and callings uniquely qualify you to integrate and reach the unchurched who God has prepared for you to minister to.

The frustrating thing about missional ministry is that it can't be put into a step-by-step witnessing guide. And, it has nothing to do with church-growth programs. Instead, it is a lifestyle change. A paradigm change in which you evaluate your abilities and begin praying for God to give you your segment of the unchurched population to strategically infiltrate. As God opens up avenues for relationships, you adjust your interests and life-choices so as to position yourself to be able to build those relationships.

Missional Living looks different for each Christian. Missional living is essentially being in your target culture but not being of it.

Church Hours are Prime Neighboring Hours

To avoid spreading a cold virus, I took my kids strolling during church service this morning. It was a refreshing time to reach unchurched neighbors. How do you find pagans? Just go walking from 11:00 to 12:00 on Sunday morning. We had a great time greeting neighbors and complimenting gardeners. If you are a pastor, try this: Switch the service to 12:00 to 1:00 and send the entire church out prayer walking in small groups.

POSITIVE EFFECT: You'll see some of the relational conflicts and issues dissolve in your midst. Unify through outreach! True Christian fellowship is not found over potluck, rather it is found on the battlefield.

In an age of Christian extremes, from cheap grace to cloistered Christianity, it is easy to lose perspective on the activity level that Christians are expected to maintain. We spend a lot of time reacting to the extremes, instead of using every resource available to us for the making of disciples and planting of churches.

Paul vigorously informs us that it is our business to redeem the time, crucifying our inhibitions and lusts, wrestling our time into submission to the vast amount of evangelism that God has planned in advance for us to do.

Can't you hear Jesus calling for workers to harvest the white fields? Don't you know that hell is a soul-wrenching misery that never ceases to sear and scorch? Is that where you want your loved ones to writhe for eternity? Don't you care? Can't you see? Can't you hear? What is holding you back?

Are you carrying baggage with you that you should have left at the foot of the rugged cross years ago? Shake off your timidity. Begin every morning in the fields, sweat and toil until the sun sets.

Harvesting is tiring, satisfying, harsh business. It is not for the faint of heart. The night is coming when souls will depart into everlasting darkness. Won't you set aside your inhibitions, rise up in the power of Christ, and rescue the lost?

Why The Door To Door?

The other day, I was invited out to do some door-to-door ministry with a few friends. We started off a little nervous but really had a great time, getting to pray with a few people and talk about Jesus to a few others.

Afterwards, I was talking about how wonderful it was and I ran into some reservations. This got me to thinking - What is positive about door-to-door? After all, everyone knows that our generation doesn't want to talk religion on their front porches. We look like JWs or Mormons. Talk about raising the affective filter!

Positive Effects:
1. The first effect is that the believer becomes increasingly zealous. Love for the lost springs from looking into their eyes. So many hopeless faces peering past dim doorjambs. And, without intense burning and love for the lost, a believer's evangelism will be hit and miss.

2. Door-to-door is like sales, only in a positive manner. The object of sales is to find your ratio. With door to door, the ratio is not as important as the people who inevitably answer and want to talk. Door-to-door discovers lost people desperate for relationships.

Relationship evangelism is on everyone's lips. Do you want to find people who need relationships? Go to where the lost are and knock on a few doors. You'll become filled with holy zeal, and you'll find people who are willing to be in a relationship with you.

The Barbarian Way - Book Review

Are you in need of a little fire? Stuck in a rut? Feeling a little too civilized? Fuel up with The Barbarian Way by Erwin McManus. Reading the four chapters in The Barbarian Way is almost as easy as taking the mall escalator. Or, as invigorating as base-jumping off of the mall roof.

The message of the book is: Stop hiding behind the cardboard flap of your box. Step out of the box and take some risks in God's service. Instead of relegating ministry to the safe harbor of predictability, prepare to sail through bloody seas and seize the prize. Jesus Christ does not save us from our troubles. Instead, he saves us into battlecraft - into a life of purpose, fulfillment and dependence on Him.

McManus has a few underlying doctrinal differences, which are eclipsed by the raw truth radiating from the text. He throws in some terms which plead to be defined and expanded upon. However, if you are discerning regarding his presuppositions and choose to ignore some of your disagreements, you'll embrace the book's central theme which is to be ready at all times to serve God, as He leads you into His powerful, unpredictable will.

God DOES have good works that He has prepared in advance for you to do. The problem is that you and I don't feel comfortable and trusting, so we hide behind the curtains of common Christianity.

The Barbarian Way will invigorate you and focus your energy into serving Christ. Far from condemning, The Barbarian Way is a catalist for vision and ministry passion.

(I do caution you that McManus is unorthodox in his views of spiritual revelation, so be discerning. If you choose to read The Barbarian Way, do so with the intention of gleaning from the theme of the book.)

Four months of rain dumped over southern Brazil last weekend leaving around 80,000 people are homeless and over 100,000 people cut off from outside help. The Register Guard also reports that more than 100 people have been killed.

What we need is copyright free DVDs and CDs that are high interest and can be mass produced. Although I get special pricing for projects when I order large quantities, the day-to-day costs can be prohibitive.

Inner City Ministries, Urban Outreach

Twenty-something, young and immature as a Christian, just out of college, I moved into a low-income apartment complex with about 75 units in sunny Orange County. As one of the only middle-class, white kids living there, I was pretty visible. What sticks out in my memory, aside from having a car dissappear from the car-port, was a gift that one of my neighbors gave me. A Korean immigrant family lived about 3 stucco doors down and I would sometimes try to say hello to their teenage son. Nobody there seemed to speak English and I didn't realize there was much of a relationship there. I certainly never witnessed about Jesus or anything. Maybe, I shared a soda or something but can't really remember anything special.

As I was moving out of the apartment and easily onto another life, a shy Korean teen approached and handed me a music CD. Somehow, he told me that my friendship was valuable to him and left me standing there with a blue WOW music cd. To this day, I'm haunted by what I could have done to befriend him and his family.

Urban ministry - just being there is a start. For some great ministry ideas check out Dallas Metro urban ministries. I am particularly interested in their Adopt-a-Block ministry.

High School Bible Study

One of the families in our church has a business located 2 blocks from the local high school. As they have a super reputation in the community, they have been able to open up a room for a weekly bible study. Two of their daughters attend the Bible study, along with a few others from the high school. The Bible study is during a late-start period, which allows kids to attend without any conflict of scheduling at the high school.

Driving past a huge festival on the river in an Oregon town - Salem - I rolled down the window. As I waited for excited, camp-chair toting pedestrians to cross to the festival, I heard a clear voice giving his testimony over a very large amp system. Hearing the voice booming across the busy highway, I leaned towards the voice. Clear as could be - a gospel testimony was ringing out. Let me tell you - there were what looked to be thousands to people at this festival. As soon as I got home, I looked it up on the web. Evangelism Business Cards

I picked up a case of cards free from Vistaprint and have been handing them out. Instead of printing business name, email, fax, etc., I entered Bible verses for the open lines on the card. Once you receive your cards, they are perfect to leave with a tip at the hotel or to hand to an acquaintance. Frequently, I run into people who exchange contact info, which gives me an opportunity to hand out. Here's how my card is laid out:

The next time you are at a family gathering, tell the people at your table how you became a Christian. Explain to them that you know that Jesus Christ took that wrath of God for your sins on the cross 2000 years ago. (That's the gospel!) In just a minute or so, you can tell 4 or 5 people the gospel simply by telling them what God has done in your life. Sure, many are already Christians, but you don't know how many will be encouraged to do the same or who might not actually KNOW Jesus Christ.

Ministry Fever

As we strive to be mature believers, Pastor Ralph Anderegg has some great exhortations:

1. Value fellowship and relationship with God more than ministry. Give God your heart and soul - He'll provide the zeal for ministry. Ministry can become more important than a relationship with God. Only God can satisfy the human soul, not works, religion or even ministry.

2. What do you give your life to? Focus your thoughts on knowing God personally.

3. Does your heart burn for the lost? Love the lost and sacrifice yourself for the souls of men, women, boys, and girls.

4. As you age, you slow down. These years can be your best years, as you focus on intimacy with God through prayer and the word.

To Sum It Up: Put a relationship with God before your ministry and, as you do so, you will develop a love for the lost that produces more intense ministry. Even in sickness, you can be a powerful minister - constant prayer and intimacy with God produces powerful results.

Third Day was playing on the radio at the insurance agent's desk. Then, a few hours later, my wife mentioned that while getting a massage, she enjoyed listening to Christian music. Twice in one day - Christ in the secular work-place.

Try playing your favorite Christian music on low at your desk this week. Don't be obnoxious - just be authentic. See where it leads. If you are asked to change the channel, be cool and switch to the easy listening. If not, let the soft sounds of Christ change those around you.

Speak the Gospel

You have one objective:

Tell someone the gospel - God poured His wrath for the sins of His people onto His Son Jesus Christ. Forgiveness and peace with God is ONLY available through the outstretched arms of Jesus Christ on the cross 2000 years ago. Because Jesus absorbed the wages of sin - death - He was not held by death but rose again and lives today.

We spend our time building relationships, handing out DVDS or books, connecting across coffee counters - all for the single purpose of being able to speak the gospel.

God changes hearts and implants faith through the means of His written or spoken gospel. If you want to see people changed, tell them the good news of Jesus Christ conquering sin and death.

Come Thirsty!

Come Thirsty by Max Lucado is a non-threatening, easy to enjoy presentation of the gospel.

I first saw Come Thirsty at a secular bookstore but didn't want to kick down the 20 dollars. A few weeks later, the bookclub that I'm a member of chose the book, so I excitedly ran out and purchased Come Thirsty. Now that Come Thirsty is in paperback, it is slightly more economical, although at 14 bucks it is a bit of a stretch for giving away. I've bought and given out four copies thus far to friends. This book is good to give out for birthdays, Christmas, or just to leave on someone's desk at work.

I'm still a fan of Seeing and Savoring Jesus Christ by Piper but this book is a bit less aggressive for those who are still pretty far from thinking too deeply about Christ. Has anyone else read this book?

Pray for the Sick - Openly

She hobbled painfully across scorching blacktop, making her way into the post-office. Behind her in line, I heard her tell the postwoman that this was a good day for her. Even though I was behind her in line, I finished my business and caught up with her by the door. I talked to her for a few minutes about her wrapped, swollen, and partially scabbed legs. Then, right there in front of the automatic door, I asked if I could pray for her legs. Immediately, she was encouraged.

Will God heal her? Is it a poor reflection on God if He chooses not to heal her? God's plan for Helen is fraught with wisdom. I don't have to defend the Creator of the Universe. However, I have seen God heal people, save people, sustain people - all in answer to a few pathetic pleaful prayers. Helen may or may not know Jesus Christ as her God and Savior. Taking a risk in the post office parking lot shines the love of Christ into her life.

Leaving the Asian market, cool air exited with her and, for a brief moment, battled with then lost to the blistering 98 degree blacktop. Suddenly, a stranger handed my wife a chilled bottle of water. "Jesus Loves You" cut through the heat, as the ice-cold Dasani changed hands. What a great picture of Jesus - cold water - piercing relief in the face of blazing hot elements.

In our pagan culture, is Jesus Loves You enough? Probably not! But, how can we take this beautiful outreach and suit it for American culture? I LOVED the idea when it happened to us this afternoon. What is the appropriate word or resource to equip this outreach to touch the souls of secular Americans?

Newspaper Ads

Listening to Mission Network News this afternoon proved valuable as usual! Their idea for evangelism of literate people is to publish small advertisments about the gospel and Bible verses in newspapers. I know that some newspapers publish Bible verses as a public service. However, it would be cool to run ads in major papers. Has anyone done that? I've also thought about running Jesus Is God ads on bus benches.

Feeding the Hungry Orphans

If you're like me, you receive 4 or 5 envelopes a month that have pictures of bloating, starving children printed on the outside. I received one the other day that said something like, "2 million children will starve to death unless you send $." I think that I am on a secret mailing list or something. So, some I throw in the trash and some I send money to, which seems to bring even more envelopes to my door.

My friends John and Joyce Jere in Lusaka, Zambia are discipling, housing, feeding, and providing medical care for 0ver 60 orphans. Periodically, some of us put together funds and send a wire over to help pay the bills. John and Joyce are natives of Zambia and have a ton of ministries going for relief and evangelism. Speaking in Tongues

While I was in Korea last week, I picked up a stack of gospel tracts in Korean at the Seoul Bible Chapel and handed them out as I felt led. As I exited a subway station, there on the steps huddled a street lady with a plastic basket containing one copper coin. Short on won, I placed a tract in the grimy plastic basket. Quickly, I put a bagel on the Visa and hustled back to find the 60ish, homeless lady finishing the tract. Pray for this lady that she will be saved.

Look around you to see what languages are being spoken. Get some gospel tracts in those languages and hand them out. If you are traveling, make sure to have native language tracts to distribute as you travel.

So many people, so little time!

As we look at the millions swirling around us - sailing into an eternity of hell or heaven, the weight of inability presses down. Without abdicating involvement, our first recourse must be prayerful trust in the sovereign election of God. All actively reject His love, yet He reaches down and gives a special touch to His chosen people. So, we must ask - Who will bring the good news, the hope of God's touch to the lost? We must listen to the words of God as He says, "The fields are white for harvest.... how can they know without a preacher?"

As you look at your realm of influence, you must see a muti-pronged evangelism strategy.
1. Be faithful to those in your inner circle - you MUST be the real deal, daily. God uses years of relational consistency to call many from the fields of sin. So, labor on diligently, transparently in your family.
2. By the sweat of our brow, we are bread-winners. Similarly, by the sweat of our brow, soul-winners succeed. Once a year is Take Your Child To Work Day. For the soul-winner, every day is a special Take Your Savior To Work Day.
3. Neighbors are always watching and listening. They see it when you storm from the house in anger, or flail in frustration. Do you want them to see the real effects of Holy Spirit cleansing? Invite them in for dinner and cards.
4. On the plane to Korea last week, my wife and I saw a man throw a fit because the airline ran out of the meal he wanted. He folded his arms and pouted silently until they got him something from first class. Not even 24 hours later, I found myself regressing into my toddler years as well because a street vendor cheated me out of a buck. Holier than thou Tim became tantrumming Tim! The point is that cashiers, waitresses, baristas are all watching. Look at it this way, "Get what is rightfully yours and others may get their just deserts! Or, let the world trample on your rights and you may turn a soul to the Savior."

Overused Oxymoron... or Powerful Purpose! Yes - most of the Lord's battles are fought at the foot of His mercy seat. Here's what I do: Pick 4 or 5 coworkers and pray every morning for them to become interested in the gospel and saved. You'll be really surprised how many opportunities you'll be handed to share Christ. Just make sure that you aren't acting like a jerk when you don't get your way in some ordinary issue. Make your first prayer request a plea for character and genuine integrity at work.

When you start prayin', Satan starts shakin'. And, when Satan starts worryin', he always starts attackin'!

1. Pray and read for your own sake.
2. Pray specifically for people in your sphere of influence.
3. Watch every emotion, word, action because you aren't the only one watching.

Mark Early said this on his April 13th Break Point commentary, " We should reach out to local, unchurched kids, offering after-school tutoring, game and movie nights, and camping trips." This was the wrap-up after commenting on the anti-Christian ethos in some public schools.

I've found that it is easy to help those I don't know personally. Building relationships with neighbors and giving the kids from down the block a hand is more difficult. It requires risk and vulnerability. Maybe, that's why the Holy Spirit uses these means. When I am weak, He is strong. More of Christ and less of me.

Living for Jesus is the foundation for your evangelism. Without the power of God in your daily life, you words are empty. Of course, God can use your words to do His bidding. But, you will miss out on the blessing.

It is my belief that if you want to see fruit, spend time discipling people. Live your life openly before your friends and neighbors. In that way, when you speak, your words of Christ will have credibility.

Another way of describing effective evanglism is BUILD RELATIONSHIPS. If you obey God's command to invite people over to your house, to go find the poor and destitiute and be a friend to them, to adopt orphans and be generous to widows, you will find planty of opportunities to share Christ's love.

I love to pass out DVDs and tracts and do bible studies in public coffee houses. However, most of my witnessing has taken place with people who I have sweated over for months and years.
